Inside The Neuro Lab

Watch how our neurodiagnostic tests are performed.
Most people have never seen a neuro test before the day they have one. These short films show how each study is carried out, so nothing in the room is a surprise.
You can watch how an EEG is recorded, how a nerve conduction study and needle EMG are performed, and what happens during the evoked potential studies — VEP for the pathway from the eye to the brain, BERA for hearing in newborns and young children, and SSEP for the sensory pathway from a limb.
What these films are for
Two questions come up more than any other before a test: will it hurt, and how long will it take. Seeing the equipment answers most of the first. An EEG records brain activity through electrodes resting on the scalp and nothing is passed into you; an NCV uses a small pulse that feels like a tap or a tingle; a needle EMG uses a fine needle and is the one study where some discomfort is normal.
The films are general demonstrations of technique, not a recording of anyone's appointment, and they are not a substitute for the instructions your own doctor gives you. Preparation differs by study — hair washed and free of oil for scalp electrodes, reduced sleep the night before for certain EEG recordings — so read the page for your test, or ask us when you book.
